Riding the delirium of two days of intense yardwork, I headed out to the Southern Festival of Books downtown—held outdoors on this uncharacteristically cold Nashville day. Despite the nasty wind gusts, I had shown up early to wander a bit and to perhaps catch the "panel" that went on before Shanna Compton and Jennifer Knox.
The first group was cool: one friend and three family members. The unifying persona was the poet Darnell Arnoult, who started off the presentation by introducing her friend Dana Wildsmith. After Wildsmith's poetry reading, Arnoult and her two second cousins, Belinda and Aaron Smith joined Arnoult onstage where they proceeded to weave a bit of a family portrait showing the ways they've kind of riffed off of each other creatively and also their points of divergence. Darnell and Aaron read poetry while Belinda, a songwriter, performed for the most part. [I should mention that I stepped away from the stage for a few minutes to go pick up a copy of Spooky when Jilly arrived.]
Anyway, after their reading Aaron (who was the 2004 winner of the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize for his book Blue on Blue Ground) approached the group of us and asked "Which one is Jennifer Knox?", I guess after recognizing me from my blog photo [my taste of notoriety for the day]. He wanted to tell her how much he loved her "hot ass poem", the wonder of which I hadn't experienced yet—but of course that would soon change. Aaron has good taste.
So Shanna and Jennifer closed out the festival to an intimate crowd. Shanna gave a sampling of poems from her gorgeous book and made me glad that I had sprung for a copy, and not just for the cool dead butterfly cover. Jennifer followed, making every one laugh out loud—we're talking milk-out-your-nose-at-lunch funny—and making me kinda ticked that I didn't have any cash on hand to pick up A Gringo Like Me.
After that, we all headed out for a quick drink with Nancy McGuire Roche who is hosting Shanna and Jennifer's reading tomorrow at Watkins College of Art & Design.
Tomorrow: R. S. Gwynn? Perhaps another round of Gringo and Spooky (think "Pancho and Lefty")?

I bought Aaron Smith's book before I went to Cali and read it straight through.
What's he like in person?

I only interacted with him for a few seconds—he unfortunately had to run before Shanna and Jennifer's reading. He seemed very nice, young, friendly, outgoing and his reading was solid.
